Looking ahead to the presidential election, it occurs to me that Senators and Representatives do not make credible Presidential candidates. Here’s the evidence:
- Truman, former Senator from Missouri, became President after FDR’s death, as being VP. Not elected president directly from Senate.
- Eisenhower was a five star General in the Army, and Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in WWII.
- John Kennedy was a Senator.
- Lyndon Johnson was former Senator, but Kennedy’s VP, made president after assassination of Kennedy.
- Richard Nixon was former Senator, but Ike’s VP.
- Gerald Ford was a Congressman, confirmed as VP after Agnew’s resignation, became President when Nixon resigned, but lost actual election bid to Jimmy Carter.
- Carter was Governor of Georgia.
- Ronald Reagan was Governor of California.
- George HW Bush was Congressman, but Reagan’s VP.
- Bill Clinton was Governor of Arkansas.
- George W Bush was Governor of Texas.
So, once in the last 60 years, a member of Congress was elected to the White House directly from the Congress.....Kennedy. Most Presidents came either from VPs or from governorships. Could it be that the American people view members of Congress as part of the problem, and therefore not credible parts of the solution? Whereas, Americans view Governors as Chief Executives already, and not responsible for what goes on in Washington? The Dems are fielding nine candidates, only one of which is a Governor.....Howard Dean.
