This paper was prepared for consideration for a Ludwig von Mises prize to be awarded at the Mises Institute’s 10th anniversary conference, October 9-11,1992. The paper draws from and expands upon a manuscript entitled “The Evolution of Values and Institutions in a Free Society: The Underpinnings of a Market Economy,” prepared for the International Conference on the Unity of Sciences, held in Seoul, Korea in August of 1992. It is also part of an ongoing research project on “The Evolution of Law: Custom Versus Authority” which has been supported by the Earhart Foundation with Fellowship Research Grants for the summers of 1991 and 1992.

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
