James E. Foy, 1917-2010

James E. Foy, former dean of students at Auburn University from 1950 to 1978 and a great friend to the Ludwig von Mises Institute, died at the age of 93 at October 9, 2010. His funeral is today. To be with Dean Foy was to understand something about what made Auburn “the loveliest city on the plains.” He was charming, genuinely optimistic, and had an unfailingly bright outlook on life. His energy even in his 80s and 90s was an astonishing thing to behold.

Pure Gold Tattoo

Reuters reports that an entrepreneur in Dubai is now offering 24-carat gold tattoos. For $50 you can get one of the more simple designs but more elaborate ones go for $5,500. The gold body art reportedly lasts for about a week.

Gold is becoming wildly popular and people are finding ever more creative and interesting uses for the malleable yellow metal. Who knows, perhaps one day someone will come up with a really crazy use for gold, like as money or something.

Google Amazes

If any institution can make wind power work, and make it economically viable, it is Google. Announcement of its plans here. “When built out, the Atlantic Wind Connection (AWC) backbone will stretch 350 miles off the coast from New Jersey to Virginia and will be able to connect 6,000MW of offshore wind turbines. That’s equivalent to 60% of the wind energy that was installed in the entire country last year and enough to serve approximately 1.9 million households.”
