Flynn v. Santorum

In As We Go Marching, John T. Flynn detailed the progression from liberty to fascism in Italy. In a World Magazine interview with Marvin Olasky, possible presidential candidate Rick Santorum rehearses his version of a vintage 1920′s Italy stump speech.

First, Flynn:

At this point, the financiers have the politicians in their pocket. No wonder they are openly bragging that happy days are here again (whilst adding insult to injury by telling us that this is God’s work!), even as banks are still on life support, courtesy of the taxpayers who are being robbed blind; meanwhile, the politicians they elect to represent their interests do not so much as stand idly by but actively collude in the robbery.

Why the state needs two parties

In Part One of As We Go Marching, John T. Flynn describes the rise of fascism in Italy. The following passages imply the need for two political parties.

A party on the left:

Thus in Italy, while individuals murmured against the growing debt, they continued as members of cities or villages or farming districts to fight valiantly for their share of the spendings. The people as beneficiaries were always more powerful than the same people as citizens.
