Monopoly Government in Iraq

Monopoly Government in Iraq
  • Iraq Awards Mobile Phone Licenses (BBC): “The Iraqi Communications Ministry granted licences to Orascom Telecom, an Egyptian firm, and to Asia Cell and Atheer Tel, news agency reports said.... No details were given about the value of the contracts.... The three contracts were carved up regionally. Orascom’s network will cover central Iraq, including Baghdad, Asia Cell will serve northern Iraq, while Atheer Tel will operate in the south. The licences will run for two years.”
  • Spam Fighters Change Tactics (NYT): “Many e-mail software experts now contend that the most powerful way to clean people’s mailboxes is to focus not on catching the spam, but on identifying the legitimate mail.”
  • DC Boomtown (WashingtonPost): “In downtown Washington alone, $1.59 billion worth of office buildings have changed hands this year, according to CB Richard Ellis, putting 2003 on pace to roughly match record years in 1998 and 2001. But the strong performance of the market means it may not be very hospitable for buyers.”
  • New $20 out this week (USAToday): and 1.5 million of them are being spent on promotion.

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
