Killing them with Kindness

Killing them with Kindness

Okay, so no one’s actually getting killed. But their lives are being made more difficult—in this case, legislation to “help” the poor by tightly regulating payday loan places will sharply restrict their access to short-term credit. Are there con men out there? Sure. Do people get ripped off? No doubt.

This doesn’t call for regulation, though—it says that there is money to be made as an honest payday lender. Blanket regulation that hurts honest entrepreneurs in an attempt to restrict con men does more harm than good.

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
