ESPN Is a Public Utility

ESPN Is a Public Utility

From USA Today:

The Justice Department is running an inquiry into how the network deals with college conferences and whether their business practices limit the exposure for some schools. ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys says the network is not commenting.

“ESPN has turned sports into a utility,” says Bob Thompson, director of the Center for Study of Popular Television at Syracuse University. “What ESPN did was to make it possible to turn on your TV and have sports come out, just like turning on your faucet and have water come out.”

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
