In Defense of Autos
The Sunday New York Times features a long essay about cars and transit, The Autonomist Manifesto (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Road). by John Tierney. Unfortunately, I waited too long to post this, so it might not be free any more. (NYT articles are free for seven days then paid after that). The article is one of the more interesting and unconventional pieces on the subject of transit that I have seen. It touches on congestion and road pricing, private roads, subsidization of mass transit by car drivers, the liberal elites disdain for cars, the myth of urban sprawl, and what he calls “the car-culture war”.

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
