The Battle of Algiers

January 9, 2004

Re-issued today in several major U.S. cities only is the important and timely film The Battle of Algiers (link includes trailers and reviews).  Covering the 1954-7 period of the conflict between French occupiers and the Algerian independence movement, the film dispassionately re-enacts the murder and torture used by both sides.  More importantly for us, the film shows how resistance to the occupation transforms the French and their treatment of the Algerians.  If you want to understand what is happening in Iraq, and what will happen, watch this fascinating film.  See this helpful review by Derek Malcolm of the Guardian, Gillo Pontecorvo: The Battle of Algiers.  Also, for more film recommendations see the Mises film page.
