In the end, this is the choice we face: the total state or total freedom. Which will we choose?

When politics isn't fomenting conflict, raising time preferences, and stupefying the nation, it is attenuating progress. Contrary to the incessant jabbering on the need for "change," all politicians despise change. Change erodes political power and undermines regimes.

Austrians have a different way of understanding history. For Rothbard, for example, a particular price datum is, no less than the Spanish-American War, a historical event, and its causes must be traced back to the subjective aims governing human plans and choices.
