Can Markets Predict Elections?

Can markets predict the next presidential election? On one sports gambling website people are literally betting they can. Other websites are running virtual “prediction markets” in an attempt to harness the information that eludes pollsters. They solicit participation from the general public in much the same way real markets do in the real world. And yet there are important differences between the gambling markets and the virtual markets.

We are advised that America is experiencing an “Obesity Epidemic”, as if it is some sort of contagious disease. Government “officials” tell us that Americans are becoming obese at an alarming rate; they appear on network news programs warning of the health consequences of being overweight. Politicians talk about taxing fattening foods to stop us from harming ourselves.
