“You’ll Be Dead in a Year!”—A Patient’s Journey Through the Healthcare System
A Bookmaker With the Mind of Mencken
The Supreme Court has opened the door for legalized sports betting around the country. In May more money was wagered in New Jersey on sports than Nevada. In its first full year, New Jersey books have taken in $3 billion in wagers. Other revenue-starved states are sure to jump on the sports betting bandwagon, after all, it must be easy running sports books. Post the numbers and watch the money roll in. Maybe not.
Consumerism? Why People Spend on “Useless” Status Symbols
At the height of her scam, con-woman Anna Sorokin, alias Delvey, filled her hotel room with shopping bags from various clothing boutiques in New York City. According to the hotel receptionist whom Sorokin targeted first as a confidante, and later as a mark, some of the staff, including the receptionist, saw this behavior as proof of the former’s monied status.
Old Wisdom Applied to Current Spending Proposals
This will sound like the start of a bad joke, but please bear with me: What do Everett Dirksen, Otto von Bismarck, H.L. Mencken, and “The Preacher” in the book of Ecclesiastes have in common?

Murray Rothbard: “Pioneer of Praxeological Analysis”
In the last decade or so there has been a concerted attempt by some economists associated more or less closely with the Austrian school to deny Rothbard’s central role in the modern revival of Austrian economics and to downplay his status as a leading proponent of the Misesian paradigm. In response, I have provided what I believe to be compelling textual evidence that Mises himself, as well as some of his closest followers, regarded Rothbard as Mises’s foremost intellectual heir (here,
