Why Government Schools Don’t Want You to Understand Economics: Mises Circle in Greenville
“It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a ‘dismal science.’ But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance.”
—Murray Rothbard
American public education succeeds in producing exactly what the state wants: confused, directionless, incurious graduates loaded with debt who look to the government for guidance and hope. The state needs a dependent population so that when crises arise—many created by the state itself—people are trained to clamor for the government to step in and “do something” about it.
This success depends on schools producing economically ignorant citizens. How else would the government be able to destroy the purchasing power of money, run a trillion-dollar debt, administer massive redistribution schemes (with bureaucrats taking their own cut, of course), and impose regulations on every industry without an uprising?
Economic understanding is the antidote to state power. Students and adults who understand economics see clearly the mismanagement, the out-of-control budgets, the causes of inflation and deficient spending, and know where the problem comes from.
