I. Introduction: Why Praise Unfamous Men? 

My title raises the question of why we take an interest in individuals of whom few have ever heard. One reason is that the victors write the history--both of domestic politics and foreign policy. Their Court historians seldom dwell on those who opposed intervention and war, if only because such historians are themselves interventionists. The proposition that “war is the health of the state” does not faze these gentlemen, since they are generally statists.

The only secure foundation for the right of free speech is private property, but civil libertarians are loathe to admit it.

The historical embodiment of monetary freedom is the gold standard. The era of its greatest flourishing was not coincidentally the 19th century, the century in which classical liberal ideology reigned, a century of unprecedented material progress and peaceful relations between nations. Unfortunately, the monetary freedom represented by the gold standard, along with many other freedoms of the classical liberal era, was brought to a calamitous end by World War I.
