Their Crisis, Our Leviathan

The circus is coming to your town soon. Maybe, I’m getting old, but I just can’t get very excited about the clowns anymore.

Yup, it’s political season again and those bothersome polls, still lusting for the votes that put or keep themselves and their pals in office, will be in our faces until the nonsense is over.

Time for the same tired two parties to trot out the same moronic messages that challenge the credulity of anyone with a healthy three figure IQ.

Happy Birthday Samuel Adams

September 27 marks the 1722 birth of a Patriot known by the present generation primarily as a brewer of beer. But Samuel Adams was a central actor in the American Revolution, as illustrated by John Adams’ 1778 visit to Paris, during which Parisians were disappointed that he was not “the famous Adams.”Samuel Adams helped organize the Committees of Correspondence, which mustered support for the patriot cause. He was the author of “The Rights of Colonists,” distributed by the Massachusetts Committee of Correspondence.

Fannie Unraveling

Fannie Mae and its cousin Freddie Mac have been a key component in funding the housing bubble. They purchase mortgages or mortage-backed securities from the mortgage issuers. They either hold the mortgages in their own portfolio or resell them with a form of credit insurance attached. They borrow money at below market rates that lenders are willing to give them based on an implied guarantee of a government bailout should their debt become insolvent. Led by Clinton appointee Franklin Raines, they have long been one of the permiere lobbying machines on the political landscape.

The Left’s Favorite President

What we had not imagined – though we should have – is that a threat to liberty would emerge that is just as great if not greater than the socialist left, namely the nationalist, warmongering, chauvinist right, that works in cooperation with deluded evangelicals and imperialistic Wilsonians of the neoconservative school. What makes this enemy particularly dangerous is that it is associated in the public mind with libertarianism because of the right’s superficial embrace of property rights and capitalism. This is a setting ripe for a succesful leftist putsch.
