Former Mises Fellow Matthew McCaffrey (video archive here) received his PhD in Economics at the University of Angers, France, on August 29. McCaffrey’s dissertation adviser was Mises Institute Senior Fellow Guido Hülsmann.

Earlier this year, the distinguished Harvard biologist, E.O. Wilson wrote of the limitations of mathematics in the sciences in the Wall Street Journal. This native son of Mobile, Alabama—better known elsewhere as the Father of Sociobiology—argued that the ability to formulate conceptual contributions to science does not stipulate mathematical expertise and or even a mathematical component.
Peter Boettke at Coordination Problem highlighted a paper by Guillermo Calvo of Columbia University, “Puzzling Over the Anatomy of Crises: Liquidity and the Veil of Finance,” which is very sympathetic to the contributions of Mises and Hayek . Calvo goes so far as to argue, “the Austrian school of the trade cycle was on the right track.”
