Trump and GOP Gave More Power to the FISA Courts They are Outraged Over Today

The long anticipated memo from House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devn Nunes has finally been released, confirming some of the allegations that have been waged at the investigation into the Trump campaign for month. The document outlines how the Obama Justice Department used the controversial “Steele Dossier” as a vital component of the warrant they presented to the FISA courts justifying their surveillance of members of the Trump presidential campaign.

Toxic Masculinity, 1920s-Style

“Don’t Blame Mental Illness for Mass Shootings” a recent headline at Politico begins, “Blame Men.” To be fair to the author, Laura Kiesel, she probably didn’t choose that title. And to be doubly fair, she doesn’t blame men in general for mass shooting. She does — correctly — point out that the overwhelming majority of people who shoot other people are men.

Trump’s Solar Tariffs Are Bad, but so Are Solar Subsidies

The Trump Administration has enacted tariffs on imported solar cells and larger modules (as well as on washing machines). In general, tariffs are counterproductive, because they only help some producers at the expense of others, and they unambiguously raise prices for consumers. That logic applies to this case as well. However, insofar as the American solar companies that import cells and modules are some of the biggest losers in this deal, they have little grounds for complaint, as they are already receiving lavish benefits from provisions in the tax code.

Class Theory and Cultural Marxism

When Karl Marx put forth his theory of history, one of the primary characteristics of the mechanical historical actors was their “class consciousness.” In Marxist doctrine, the whole of humanity in a capitalist society can be divided cleanly into two classes: the proletariat and the bourgeoisie. The proletariat was the exploited working class, and their class consciousness would eventually cause them to revolt against the capital-owning bourgeoisie, whose own class consciousness compelled them to exploit the proletariat by “stealing” the product of their labor.

Why Perfect Competition Is not So Perfect

According to the popular view, a proper competitive environment must emulate the perfect competition model.

In the world of perfect competition, a market is characterized by the following features:

  • There are many buyers and sellers on the market
  • Homogeneous products are traded
  • Buyers and sellers are perfectly informed
  • There are no obstacles or barriers to enter the market

Moreover, buyers and sellers have no control over the price of the product. They are price takers.

Trump’s SOTU: Guns and Butter for Everyone

The theater of the State of the Union Address is always the hardest part to stomach. The endless outbursts of applause, the parading up of guests with allegedly inspiring stories, and the calculated pauses all make me wish we could return to the days when Thomas Jefferson submitted his addresses to Congress in writing.

Nevertheless, the SOTU speeches do often provide some good fodder for evaluating just how bad an administration’s plans are for the next year.
