The battle of ideas is not an intellectual exercise, and the Mises Institute is not in the business of discussing ideas for their own sake. Murray Rothbard understood what is at stake, and he knew that ideas are at the center of winning the real-world fight against our greatest enemy, the state.
The fight for freedom is the fight for civilization itself. As Ludwig von Mises wrote long ago, “The foundation of any and every civilization, including our own, is private ownership of the means of production. Whoever wishes to criticize modern civilization, therefore, begins with private property.”
But unless people believe that freedom and private property are good things, people simply won’t fight for them.
Rothbard and Mises understood that civilization cannot be preserved unless we first explain and spread the ideas of a free society. These ideas are the critical foundation for civilization built on essential nonstate institutions like private markets, private schools, and truly independent families and churches.
To the extent that we still enjoy these blessings of private institutions today, we can thank the freedom fighters who have come before us and learn from them. To honor their work, we want to send you a copy of The Fight for Liberty, by Mises Institute Editor in Chief Ryan McMaken, which explores the intersection of scholarship, politics, and activism. One lesson we learn is that the fight for freedom is not just about opposing the state. The fight requires us to build up our own private-property based order, an order that is better than what the state can offer.
