Professor Georgy Ganev joins Bob to explain that, contrary to the claims of David Graeber and the MMTers, the barter origin of money has not been refuted.
Georgy Ganev
Georgy Ganev is an economist, Chief Assistant Professor at Sofia University’s Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, and Program Director at the Sofia-based think tank Centre for Liberal Strategies. At Sofia University, he teaches and specializes in macroeconomics, money, banking and financial markets, and new institutional economics. At CLS, he directs the Economic Perspectives Program.
From 2003 to 2014, he was a member of the Governing Board of the Bulgarian Macroeconomic Association, serving as its Chair from 2005 to 2009. Between 2021 and 2024, he was elected to four Bulgarian National Assemblies, where he served as a member—and in 2021, Chair—of the Standing Budget and Finance Committee.
Dr. Ganev holds a Ph.D. in economics from Washington University in St. Louis. His areas of interest include monetary history, theory and policy, political economy, transition economics, development and growth, new institutional economics, and Austrian economics. His publications focus on Bulgarian economic development, covering topics such as political economy, corruption, the mid-1990s Bulgarian currency crisis and exchange rate regime credibility, the costs and benefits of joining the euro area, and Bulgarian business elites. Another key focus of his work is the issue of economic integration and development within the European Union.
