Highschool Application College Application
In September 2025, the Mises Institute will hold its next Mises Book Clubs, a program that promotes deep reading in Austrian economics. New this fall, we will hold TWO virtual clubs led by TWO amazing leaders for high schoolers and undergraduate students. Please apply for a position in the Mises Book Club by August 8. Decisions will be communicated to all applicants by August 18.
Highschool Mises Virtual Book Club:
Join our high school virtual book club as we explore Henry Hazlitt’s Economics in One Lesson, a classic that reveals how economic decisions impact society in both seen and unseen ways. Felicia Jones will guide students through weekly discussions to engage critically with Hazlitt’s ideas, connect them to real-world events, and to grow in economic way of thinking. This online club offers virtual and intellectually engaging environment where teens can be introduced to Austrian economics. (Note: day and time will be determined by a group poll after acceptance.)
College Mises Virtual Book Club:
The reading for this book club will be Planning for Freedom and Twelve other Essays and Addresses by Ludwig von Mises.
In “Planning for Freedom,” Mises makes the case that there’s no such thing as an “unplanned economy.” The market economy consists of the voluntary exchanges between buyers and sellers—it is a cooperative division of labor guided by entrepreneurs seeking to provide goods and services that consumers value. Entrepreneurs, subject to profit and loss, make production plans with consumers in mind.
What many writers mean by a “planned economy” is a substitution of plans. They want government plans instead of the plans of market participants.
The book also includes other important essays from Mises: “Middle-of-the-Road Policy Leads to Socialism,” “Inflation and Price Control,” and “Profit and Loss.” For that reason, the book is an excellent introduction to the ideas of Ludwig von Mises. Students will also be able to discuss the ways in which Mises inspired Murray Rothbard, as Rothbard’s “The Essential von Mises” is also included in the book.
A small group of specially selected undergraduate students will be able to discuss this work with Dr. Karras Lambert in seven weekly virtual meetings, starting on September 2nd. The meetings will be held on Tuesday evenings from 7:30-8:30 p.m. central time, and students will receive complimentary hard copies of the book.
