Cronyism Seminar

Cronyism in American History: 1776 to the Great Depression

American history is filled with examples of politicians giving special privileges to favored businesses and other interest groups at the expense of the public. Is this sort of corruption random or an inevitable consequence of political power? Are case studies of special interest policies isolated or do they form an overarching narrative of American history?

In Cronyism: Liberty versus Power in Early America, 1607–1849 and Cronyism: Rise of the Corporatist State, 1849–1929, Dr. Patrick Newman traces more than three centuries of American political and economic history. Using Murray Rothbard’s unique approach to studying history, Newman shows how special interests lobbied for government power to enrich themselves and build the modern regulatory state. Far from protecting the public against powerful businesses, government intervention protected those businesses against market competition.

The Mises Institute invites you to join us in Auburn on May 27-28 for a five-lecture seminar by Dr. Patrick Newman titled “Cronyism in American History: 1776 to the Great Depression.” The lectures will be filmed on site and turned into a new Mises Academy course.
