Impose Rules, But Get Around Them

Impose Rules, But Get Around Them

The Chicago Tribune runs an  AP story stating how the US Labor Department is suggesting ways around its newest overtime rules. Quoting the article: “Among the options: Cut workers’ hourly wages and add the overtime to EQUAL the original salary, or raise salaries to the new $22,100 annual threshold, making them ineligible. The department says it is merely listing well-known choices available to employers, even under current law. ‘We’re not saying anybody should do any of this,’ said Labor Department spokesman Ed Frank.” So they spend our money on coming up with and implementing new rules to interfere with the economy and then spend money on informing businesses on how to get around the rules. Let me see...that copy of Bureaucracy is around here somewhere.

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
