Here is Hans Hoppe's first treatise in English - actually his first book in English - and the one that put him on the map as a social thinker and economist to watch. He argued that there are only two possible archetypes in economic affairs: socialism and capitalism. All systems are combinations of those two types. The capitalist model he defines as pure protection of private property, free association, and exchange - no exceptions. All deviations from that ideal are species of socialism, with public ownership and interference with trade.
Within the structure of socialism, he distinguishes the left and right version. "Conservative" socialism favors high regulation, behavioral controls, protectionism, and nationalism. The "liberal" version tends more toward outright public ownership and redistribution.
The consequences of socialism vary based on their degree and kind, but they have similarities: high costs, resource waste, low growth.
This treatise has long been out of print, but is now avaiable again for use in comparative systems classes and for an orientation to the theory of economic systems. The theoretical apparatus is Rothbardian to the core, and its main contribution is to provide an organizing principle for understanding the structure of real-world economies as measured against pure types.
A tour de force.

Though it was published by a major academic publishing house, the visuals are not what they might have been. Capitalism = Freedom, Fascism = Conservative Socialism
Before you judge the book based on what the main stream media has told you what Capitalism, try reading some of it.
This is an eye opening, mind blowing book, you will quickly understand what true Capitalism is. While reading this book, I soon realized that the two major parties are just fighting over 2 kinds of Socialisms, Conservative and Liberal. Both of which make the middle class poor. Capitalism, as outlined in this book, is the only way to true prosperity and to raise people out of poverty.
Michael Moore really needs to read this book...

A Crushing Blow to Socialism
"A Theory of Socialism and Capitalism" is treasure. I recommend this book over "Socialism' by Mises because Hoppe demolishes socialism on economic and ethical grounds.
Hoppe's primary economic argument against socialism focuses on costs. The cost of producing increases under socialism and the cost of leisure falls. Less production will result in impoverishment. His economic arguments alone are convincing.
Hoppe's groundbreaking ethical critique of socialism is icing on the cake. Hoppe proves that no person can argumentatively justify socialism. The norm (acceptable rule of behavior) implied in argumentation is that it is illegitimate to aggress against a non-aggressor. Moreover, no socialist ethic can be justified in argumentation. The capitalist ethic is the only ethic that can be justified in the course of argumentation.
You will never be the same after reading this book. It isn't an easy read, but this book is definitely worth the effort. One of the best books ever.
