[Excerpted from chapter 3 of Studies in Economic Nationalism .] Self-sufficiency — which is the prime objective of economic nationalism — enjoyed in theory and in practice considerable favor in ancient Greece. Aristotle regarded “political and economic self-sufficiency as a basic prerequisite of the ideal state.” Thus, in Book I of his Politics ,
