Bartlett’s Misgivings on War

Bartlett’s Misgivings on War

Bruce Bartlett, a supply-side economist who has written on the Austrian School, has reversed himself on the Iraq war.

Then: “Iraq is clearly the most terrorist-friendly nation on Earth. The fact that Iraq’s people deserve liberation is also important — even if it makes me sound like a Wilsonian liberal, something I have always hated. Still, that is where I stand.”

Now: “I for one would not have supported the war if I thought its principal justification was the liberation of the Iraqi people, which is what the White House now says was its primary mission. Our military exists to defend the nation, not be the world’s policeman.”

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
