I am a high school senior and often get into debates with my friends and classmates who have all been under the notion that Bill Clinton is some God of the Economic World who single handidly brought about tremendous economic prosperity during his presidency.  I have been trying to research information that refutes this claim, but have not found much (even though I am 100% sure that the growth was not of Bill Clinton's doing).

Thus, I would be very grateful if I could be given a detailed account of what really happend in the nineties.

Bill Clinton was not a "good" economic influence, but he was less bad than many recent ones. The sad and awful fact is that the Clinton era was one of more fiscal conservatism than that of George W. However, part of that was due to the fact that Congress opposed many Clinton spending programs.

I don't have time right now to show the many ways in which Clinton did cause harm to the economy, so if nobody else does it first I'll tackle it later tonight.

The big thing that happened in the nineties was the computer/Internet boom.  This allowed businesses to have huge productivity increases.  This is totally uncorrelated with anything Bill Clinton did as President.

I have my own blog at FSK's Guide to Reality. Let me know if you like it.

The size of the federal government expanded less under Bill Clinton than under any president since Kennedy INCLUDING Reagan.  Reguardless of the reasons for this the results are what matter.  Clinton fought battles with congress over spending as the opposing party had significant majorities in congress and were for the middle 4 years of the Clinton years relatively spendthrift.  The results were positive as the amount stolen from the future of the country(loaned by the federal government) dropped.

In the last two years growth of government accelerated to a much higher rate as the Republicans dropped their spendthrift ways.  There were massive spending increases under the Bush administration.

Bill Clinton may be the best president of the 20th century.  I say this as an anarchist, regarding him as a contemptable villain.  But certainly less contemptable and villainous than many of his competitors.
