Later this month the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Justice, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will hold a “joint public workshop on the intersection of patent policy and competition policy and its implications for promoting innovation.” This quote from FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz is a real head-scratcher:

Since innovation is the only sustainable source of America’s competitive advantage, the relationship between intellectual property, which captures the value of innovation, and competition policy, which maintains a dynamic marketplace for innovation, is of paramount importance.

As one person remarked to me, “Faulty premise, faulty conclusion.”
