Description

Human Action is the most important book on political economy you will ever own. It was (and remains) the most comprehensive, systematic, forthright, and powerful defense of the economics of liberty ever written. This is the Scholars Edition: accept no substitute. You will treasure this volume.

The Scholars Edition is the original, unaltered treatise (originally published in 1949) that shaped a generation of Austrians and made possible the intellectual movement that is leading the global charge for free markets.

Made available exclusively through the Ludwig von Mises Institute, this edition, Mises's original, is the one to own.

  • This edition is a case-bound hardback with a beautiful cover that is also meant for extreme use and durability;
  • No hardbound edition compares in price;
  • The pagination of the original 1949 edition is preserved, but it also includes invaluable additions.
  • Includes the 1954 index prepared under Mises's supervision, the most complete ever published, united here with the book for the first time.
  • The introduction, by Hans-Hermann Hoppe, Jeffrey Herbener, and Joseph Salerno--based on newly discovered archives--tells of the tragic and glorious history of this seminal work, and of its bright future as the manifesto of liberty.
  • This edition is keyed to the world's first and only Study Guide to Human Action, by Robert Murphy, which opens up this book as never before.
All told, The Scholars Edition looks exactly like the classic work it is, ready for a lifetime (or two) of use.

Mises himself wrote the following by way of explanation of why he wrote the book:

Economics does not allow any breaking up into special branches. It invariably deals with the interconnectedness of all phenomena of acting and economizing. All economic facts mutually condition one another. Each of the various economic problems must be dealt with in the frame of a comprehensive system assigning its due place and weight to every aspect of human wants and desires. All monographs remain fragmentary if not integrated into a systematic treatment of the whole body of social and economic relations.

To provide such a comprehensive analysis is the task of my book Human Action , a Treatise on Economics. It is the consummation of lifelong studies and investigations, the precipitate of half a century of experience. I saw the forces operating which could not but annihilate the high civilization and prosperity of Europe. In writing my book, I was hoping to contribute to the endeavors of our most eminent contemporaries to prevent this country from following the path which leads to the abyss.

The Scholars Edition of Human Action is the definitive edition of this great work and foundation of every library of freedom.

Simply the most important book of the 20th century
This book is one of the few works of literature that truly deserves the title of "magnum opus". If you are familiar with Austrian or libertarian thought, you have probably heard some lofty praises of it, and believe me, it really does live up to the hype. This is not one of those long books which is legendary because it contains 50-100 pages of profound insight, and other sections which could have been left out. It is a 900 page book where each section complements the others, and is a "treatise" in the full sense of the term. It is hard for me to comprehend how someone in the 1930s could have written something so accurate, precise, and prescient.

Reading this book is not an easy undertaking. It will take you a long time. But when you get to the end of it, you will have been happy that you did.

The $36 price tag appear to be relatively high at first, but as someone who has spent a very large number of hours using the book- this high cost is reflected in its durability and binding.

An Intellectual Masterpiece
This is one of the most important books you will ever read. Its importance in the history of ideas cannot be overstated, and the Mises Institute has managed to produce this wonderful edition at an incredibly low price. Thirty-six Federal Reserve Notes is a steal for a product of this quality. The binding is sturdy and the orginal pagination of the 1949 edition is perfectly intact.

The nearly 900 pages of this tome can be intimidating at first, but this book has been one of the most intellectually stimulating things I have read in my entire life. The book contains the whole of economic theory as Mises saw it, and is uncomprimising in its relentless application of logic. Although it can be a difficult read, the study guide available through the Mises Institute helps to clear up virtually all confusion.

Even if you disagree with the Austrian perspective on economics this book is still a testament to the genius of Mises, and stregnth of his mind. In short, buy this book.

Human Action
A great book but you really need a dictionary nearby. I feel that only the most astute readers and/or the very committed will finish this. One thing this book has going for it in this regard is that typically your average Joe isn't going to want read it anyway. You get a great sense of accomplishment after finishing this behemoth for the first time. Just my thoughts.

Imperative Reading
Human Action is by far one of the most important works of our time. It is imperative reading for those who would preserve their liberty during this period of economic uncertainty and expanding sentiment towards statism.

Utilize in Harmony
If you have yet to read this truly awesome work, than you may have yet not begun loving what you have to have.
If I was wealthy enough to be a philantropist, I would hand this out on the street. It is a very important work!
