I know this would be pretty tough, but I'm hoping someone here could have at some point read what I am looking for (unrelated to anything to do with this website).

In some book I read something like this:

"He ran out on the street and saw all these people as the clock was ticking away. He wanted to scream to the to stop. To scream that they were dying. Why wouldn't these people [these clocks] stop!?"

This is the vague recollection I have. I thought initially it was from Jacques the Fatalist and his master (Diderot), but I am not finding the quote in there. Then I thought maybe Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse V, but I don't see it there either.

Anyone remember anything? If you just mention books I can recall whether I've read them.

Thanks!

P.S. Also vaguely remember that this was in the book quoted as the thought of some poet (whether fictional or not, I don't remember)

Alright, found it. It was in Slaughterhouse-Five after all.
