He's no lover of liberty--Grapes of Wrath and many (all?) of his other works have strongly statist messages. But The Moon Is Down portrays a moderately statist society (the U.S.) getting invaded by a very statist society, so the book comes out as pro-liberty.

I will check it out! Steinbeck is one good writer. I enjoyed Grapes of Wrath, but after watching the movie with Henry Fonda, I am not sure of Steinbecks position on socialism.

"Know how to share our blessings" is not the same thing as "The government should take from the wealthy and give to the less fortunate."

It's moral to share your own blessings. It's not moral to force other people to share theirs. And every time the government does anything, force or the threat of force is present.

I think its a mandate for those who are well in life to help others who are in need of help...we should know how to share our blessings.

Exactly. Those that have many gives to the less fortunate people.
