This is when you find yourself stuck without. You try to remember to keep your eyes open for these missing pieces but without fail you always forget. Well, stop letting this one essential important accessory slip your mind and go get yourself a cute umbrella!An umbrella is one item that you will never regret adding to your wardrobe. Once you buy one, you might find yourself always in the market. They’re a great finishing touch to any outfit. And on a rainy day when you’re not feeling like you look your best, it’s a great pick me up!In my shopping experiences, I have found two places that I would recommend. Century 21 is a go to spot for anything, especially accessories. I personally like the Century 21 in Long Island. But I have recently become more acquainted with the new one in Rego Park. I would not advise on the one in downtown Manhattan. I always leave with a headache. But any Century has Moschino and Dolce & Gabbana umbrellas for under $40. These have a retractable wooden handle. They’re good for carrying in your bag. They’re small so you can use them while traveling, on the go or for your commute. These brands will last you. The Moschino lived for about 5 years, until someone stole it in a restaurant one sad night! You can start your umbrella browsing at Century 21. It’s a no fail spot.My personal favorite umbrella comes from an extremely inexpensive store, Joyce Leslie. I frequent a hidden one deep in Long Island when I’m out there. At times, it’s best to shop in a neighborhood that is not heavily populated. This way, you have your pick of the litter. Not only that, but it’s peaceful. If you have a car, take a ride to Joyce Leslie in Huntington. It’s big, spacious and neat. You’ll definitely leave with something! I scored on a clear umbrella with lacey embroidery. It has a long clear stem with a fancy handle. It was only $20, but looks like $100. It’s very Betsey Johnson-ish. Love!!There is one more store that is worth mentioning only for the mere fact of filling you in. I had a clear umbrella that covers you very closely. It was from Laila Rowe, which I am not a fan of.They are all over the borough of Manhattan. This is one of those stores that everything looks pretty but a week later it’s in the garbage. Anything and everything falls apart or breaks, including this umbrella. I’d steer clear from this purchase.When choosing an umbrella, it's good to find the right size that fits for your lifestyle. It's best to have one small one that's easy to carry and one a bit larger that is more for fun! But, I'd avoid the large oversized umbrellas that look like you took it right off your lawn furniture. There's nothing worse than the city filled with these obnoxious umbrellas on a rainy day. It's hard enough to manuiver through pedestrian traffic in Manhattan rain. Please be considerate and keep them on your patio table where they belong! :)Now, finding an umbrella may not be on the top of your to do list. But if you can keep you’re eye out for one, you won’t regret it. It’ll put a little sunshine in your rainy day. They also mention that drier skin can lead to flare-ups of excema and psoriasis. I’m still invited to dinner parties.”Many former users of deodorants and anti-perspirants state they have a fear of wiping chemicals with aluminum under their arms every day. The Alzheimer's Association lists this unfounded belief as a myth, yet it is a concern for those with a family history of Alzheimer's Disease. The fear of anti-perspirants containing aluminum has also sparked a fear of creating an environment for breast cancer, but the National Cancer Institute debunks this myth by stating they "are not aware of any conclusive evidence linking the use of underarm antiperspirants or deodorants and the subsequent development of breast cancer."Regardless of those on the hygiene fringe, personal cleanliness has become a national pastime. All one has to do is turn on a television and we are bombarded with commercials for Old Spice featuring actor Isiah Mustafa, Dove (equating natural beauty with cleanliness), and Head and Shoulders commercials featuring the Pittsburgh Steelers' Troy Polamalu. Celebrities with personal perfume lines such as Mariah Carey, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Halle Berry, Britney Spears, Beyonce, and Sarah Jessica Parker are now informing the public that we need to smell like them. I'm not really sure about the whole smelling like Britney Spears thing, but open the pages of any fashion magazine and you'll see hygiene reigns supreme.Daily showering and regular shampooing is considered the norm and letting others believe you don't participate in these hygiene rituals may lead to an adverse response. Todd Felix, a non-deodorant using online producer for Sony, states, “When you tell a person you don’t wear deodorant, you come across as, ‘Oh, how European, how natural, how funky.’” Todd then says he has told a few women that he has dated that he does not use deodorant. “It’s weird, but I don’t smell,” Mr. Felix will inform the ladies. In response, he says, “the comment is always, ‘You think you don’t smell.’" Hmm. Todd, maybe the lesson here is don't tell women you want to sleep with that you have potential funk monk. The theme of the fashion show was "Fashion Unites Us", and presented collections by Slovakian designers Annamaria Kiss Kosa, Libor Komonsny and Ema Klein; as well as Austrian designer Eva Poleschinski, and Slovak-American designer Lucy Racek.View slideshow:Slovak Fashion Night 2012This was the second year in a row I attended the SFN; and it happened one week after I traveled to Slovakia to photograph the Factory Fashion Show for fashion designer Ina Budovska. I was in full Slovak spirit and appreciation. The first collect was titled “Clinical”, and by Libor Komosny, who along with Annamaria Kiss Kosa, and Ema Klein were from Studio of Fashion Design, Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava under the supervision of Julia Sabova. The designer made a fashion collection out of medical inspired clothes, hues and mood. Seeing models walk the runway in face-masks and latex gloves was a little eerie, yet original and interesting. (This hits close to home for me because I work part-time in a hospital). My favorite outfit was look two. Its a long sleeve dress, aqua blue/green in color with a hem line just above the knees. Another nifty aspect to the look was parts of the sleeve and cuff cut out with “surgical” precision.Ema Klein’s “Skeleton” collection comprised of six gothic style outfits. The primary colors used were black, white, and silver. Look one really stood out. A black gown with spiked skirt and oversized spiked shoulders. Look two was pretty hot as well. It was a black capped-sleeve top with large black feathers on the shoulders, big flowing triangular pleats across the midsection, and a very sexy cleavage. The model who wore this looked DAZALNG! The beautiful Ivana Surovcova, was is a finalist on Slovakian Let’s Dance, walked in the final outfit. It was a white, short wedding dress, with long jagged train. Annamaria Kiss Kosa (winner of Bratislava Fashion Days) was third with her collection “Flavour of Coffee”. Her 11 look collection was pretty nice, with a lot of attractive dresses to choose from. Ms. Kosa's cut, colors and construction of garments created a look of nature that made me think of bees, flowers, and coffee. Look number 2 is a splendid artistic statement with it yellow and blue pallette, and very interesting folds. Look 9 is much more practical, and can be worn at more occasion, yet also has tremendous flare. It’s a brown and gold sleeveless dress, a with spherical skirt whose please wave and wraps as a woman walks. Quite nice I must say. Austrian designer Eva Poleschinski presented her clothing label [ep_anoui] and its F/W 12/13 collection named “l’air de vivre”. The 12 look collection is soulful, rich, and spontaneous. The clothes had an irregular, unpredictable pattern to them that reminded me of very good improvisational Jazz. Each piece was unique and looked better as the models came closer. It’s too difficult to choose a favorite look because I liked so many. Instead, what I admired most in the collection are the wraps, jewelry, broad belts, and fun with layers.The final designer was Slovak-American Lucy Racek, aka Lucia Racekova. The 9 piece collection is fun and girlie. Ivana Surovcova opened the set playing with two red balloons with white polka dots, to match her white short summer dress with red details trim. The second outfit also stood out to me. The model walked out holding a giant lollipop, wearing a sky blue short skirt and black and white stripped top.Winner of Slovakian Super Star - “Slovakian Idol” Dominika Stara sang at the opening of the fashion show as her TV team filmed her performance for her reality show. The event was hosted by rising Slovakian-American Actress, Katarina Morchacova. My appreciation for the beauty and creativity of Slovakian people continues to grow.
