• Re: Overview/Explanation of American Economic History from a Free Market/Austrian perspective

Wow, can't believe I missed this and it only got one response. Rothbard was a great economic historian, you can refer to the following works, available at Mises for free in various digital mediums and in print at the Store. America's Great Depression Free: http://mises.org/rothbard/agd.pdf Print...

  • "The Creature from Jekyll Island" Book

I'm curious what some of you have to say about G. Edward Griffin's "The Creature from Jekyll Island" book? Did you like it? Was it thorough enough or was there any important information you know of that might not have been included by Griffin? Just curious about your thoughts regarding...

  • Iran War Resolution

I've long been convinced that the real threat Iraq and Iran pose is to the hegemony of the dollar. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iranian_Oil_Bourse Now read this, but skip all the 'whereas'es and read what it specifically calls for: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=hc110...

  • Re: Questions regarding FED's interest rate mechanism

Point taken. However I'm not debating the form and makeup of a state, or indeed the virtues of anarchism! What I'm curious about is whether or not the core economic issue is the violent enforcement of a monopoly on currency ( by the state ). Fine, get rid of the FED - let the state control money...

  • Re: Questions regarding FED's interest rate mechanism

@ meambobbo Great post, just curious... So... perhaps what might be ideal is a completely open, free-market competition in actual currency? Gold, silver, paper money (backed 100% by X Y or Z) or e-gold, diamonds, vintage cheeses (joke!) or whatever the free-market innovates and finds most convenient...

  • FED open market ops and primary dealers

I'm trying to figure this out. When the FED conducts open market operations to buy treasuries, it adds to its reserves, allowing credit to be created many times larger than the value of the treasuries. This will cause inflation. My question is this: who is actually purchasing the treasuries? Do all...

  • Re: When can the fed print more money?
Also, the main reason that the fed lowers rates is to increase borrowing and thus increase spending/consumption (to "stimulate the economy" in news fedspeak).
Note that this is a smokescreen put up by John Maynard Keynes in 1935, well after the Fed was...

  • Re: When can the fed print more money?

See Rothbard's What Has Government Done to Our Money . When a regular person buys a government bond, that person is spending money they had to have somehow received beforehand from someone else. That is, it must have been money that was already in circulation. When the Federal Reserve buys government...

  • Swap Lines

This is a new intiative by the FED: "These arrangements will now provide dollars in amounts of up to $30 billion and $6 billion to the ECB and the SNB respectively," the Fed said, extending the term of these swap lines through Sept. 30. Can someone elaborate on this for me? Will this make a...

  • The Problem with Voters

On the news I hear way too many comments about politicians insulting one another (mudslinging), digging up old facts about their opponents' personal history, etc. Reporters make a big deal out of it, like it's some sort of reality show. "Who said what? Who insulted who? Who used to smoke...
