was there ever a time when the US didn't have gov. controlled air traffic control?

according to wiki, I think the answer is yes, but i can't find any other source to back this up.

Re: Air Traffic Control - Was It Ever Controlled by Free Market?

Based on the Cato link that Dan Mitchell posted, Nav Canada appears to have a monopoly on air traffic control. This is not free-market policy.

Re: Air Traffic Control - Was It Ever Controlled by Free Market?

Canada uses a privatized air traffic control?

	http://danieljmitchell.wordpress.com/2010/12/28/why-cant-we-copy-those-radical-free-market-canadians-and-privatize-the-air-traffic-control-system/

Is it really free market, or is it semi facist?

Air Traffic Control - Was It Ever Controlled by Free Market?

On wiki it says the Bureau of Air Commerce suggested the airlines take care of air traffic control. But soon after the government took over control.

Was the free market ever in charge of air traffic control? If so, are there any sources bsides wiki?
