I have a roommate who sometimes gets too drunk. He knows he gets too drunk, and on a number of occasions, it's resulted in him making some pretty bad decisions. It's pretty fair to say that if he puts himself into certain situations, he'll end up drinking way too much, and it won't be pretty. It's probably better that he avoid those sorts of situations. And even though he knows that, sometimes he puts himself into those situations, and regrets it the next day. Clearly he prefers what he does at the time that he does it, but he ought not to. I don't think that's controversial; even he would agree.

"but there seems to be a sense in which we want to say that the alcoholic shouldn't value the drink, "

Do 'we' want to say that ? Who are 'we' ?
